Slate package (blue, red, grey)
"Every slate tells its story"
Erni always says. Blue slate for power, gray for finesse, red for spice. Three wines that show why we have been devoted to these soils for over 200 years.
Dr. Loosen Estate
In family ownership for over 200 years, the estate has been led by Ernst F. Loosen since 1988.
For him, great wines are the perfect expression of soil, climate, and grape variety. With the heritage of his ancestors – own-rooted, old vines in historic Grosse Lagen of the Central Mosel – he found exactly the material needed to craft independent, complex wines of world-class quality. Today, Dr. Loosen is internationally recognized as a flagship of the rediscovered German Riesling culture. Since 1993, the estate has been a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
"The creation of a great wine begins in the mind."
Enjoying a great wine is a truly unique pleasure. Its complex aromas reflect an entire universe – from the changing seasons to the distinctive terroir of a vineyard, and all the way to the passion of the winemakers.
Every great winemaker I have met has a clear vision. They know exactly how their wines should taste long before the first grape is even harvested. Above all, they let the individuality of the terroir triumph over technology.

Discover our vineyards
Blue slate, red slate, volcanic rock – our vineyards form the foundation for world-class Rieslings. Each site uniquely shapes the character of our wines.
On the 1868 vineyard map of the Trier administrative district, created as a basis for tax assessment for Mosel estates, seven of our sites were designated as Grosse Lagen. This classification is comparable to the Grand Cru system of Burgundy and was updated in 1995 by Stuart Pigott and Hugh Johnson in their German Wine Atlas. Today, we deliberately draw on this historically proven classification.
Since 1988, we have bottled exclusively Rieslings from these classified Grosse Lagen as single-vineyard wines, while all other wines are released under our Gutsriesling category.

VDP.Classification
Since 1993, Dr. Loosen Winery has been a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates).
Through the VDP classification, the estate commits to the highest quality standards, placing origin and terroir at the center of its winemaking philosophy. The four-tier VDP quality pyramid organizes wines according to their source:
VDP.GROSSE LAGE⎥GG Réserve
Since the 2011 vintage, we have been producing GG RÉSERVE wines from selected Grosse Lagen. These currently include Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Ürziger Würzgarten, and Erdener Prälat – additional sites will follow in the future. Reserves from the 2018 and 2019 vintages are currently available.
With their diverse soil formations – blue slate, volcanic rock, and red slate – these sites, planted with own-rooted vines, embody the very essence of our winery.
VDP.GROSSE LAGE⎥GG
Our wines at the VDP.GROSSE LAGE classification come from Germany’s finest vineyards. Here, the best wines develop with complex flavors, expressive vineyard character, and exceptional aging potential.
The sites are defined by the VDP regional associations and precisely delineated by individual parcels.
VDP.GROSSE LAGE⎥Off-dry grand cru Rieslings
Classic, off-dry Rieslings from the Grand Cru sites of the Mosel. From Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese, we hand-select the grapes for these delicate, off-dry Prädikat wines, depending on the conditions each vintage provides.
The Mosel, with its cool nights and misty mornings, offers ideal conditions for the noble rot Botrytis, which gives these Auslesen, Beerenauslesen, and Trockenbeerenauslesen their unmistakable character.
VDP.ORTSWEIN
Our Riesling Ortswein comes from traditional parcels in Graach, each with its own distinctive character.
Here, we craft wines that reflect the typical character of this village and its vineyards.
VDP.GUTSWEIN
These wines are produced from sites that are not designated as Grosse Lagen in the Prussian vineyard map, but have the slate soils characteristic of the Moselle.
The main idea here is to produce Rieslings that reflect the terroir of our growing region.
