A STORY OF TWO FAMILIES
Our Dr. Loosen winery unites two distinct winemaking traditions – from both sides of my family. My mother's family favored a delicate, light Mosel Riesling with a touch of residual sweetness – a signature style of my grandfather, Dr. Adams, who married into my mother's winery, Dr. Zach Bergweiler-Prüm-Erben. Later, I discovered another fascinating truth: My paternal great-grandfather, Peter Loosen from Ürzig, was an uncompromising advocate of dry wines. For him, any sweetness in Riesling was a flaw, and he simply sold any barrels that didn't dry completely as bulk wine. Both paths have their own unique appeal – and we have decided to continue both with respect and passion.
HOW WE REDISCOVER THE TRADITION OF OFF-DRY AND SWEET RIESLINGS AS PRODUCED BY MY GRANDFATHER.
After countless tastings of Rieslings from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, I became curious about how these Prädikat wines of our ancestors were produced – before the German wine law of 1971 changed so much. This new law shifted the focus to must weight, instead of the single vineyard site and the recognizability of the Prädikat classification through tasting. Until 1971, there were clear rules for residual sugar in Prädikat wines like Kabinett and Spätlese: the potential alcohol content determined how much residual sugar a natural wine or Spätlese could have. Wines with, for example, 76° Oechsle were allowed to contain approximately 25–30 g/l of residual sugar – no more. The 1971 law abolished these limits, and suddenly many wines became increasingly opulent and sweet. To revive the original style with its subtle residual sweetness – as my grandfather used to say – we launched our "Tradition" project. Sporadically since 1993, but regularly since 2012, we produce one Kabinett, one Spätlese, and one Auslese each vintage – using our grandfather's methods: spontaneously fermented in the barrel, aged for two years in large wooden casks on the lees, and then matured for another ten years in the bottle after bottling before release. Patience is our most important ally here.
The Réserve package stands for depth, power, and length. Dry and precise in the glass.
Dr. Loosen has had reserves since 2011 – currently the 2018 and 2019 vintages are available.
What's included in the package:
- 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen GG RÉSERVE Riesling dry
- 2019 Urziger Würzgarten Unterst Pichter GG RÉSERVE Riesling dry
- 2019 Erdener Prälat GG RÉSERVE Riesling dry
The three Grand Cru vineyards bring together three different soil types: blue slate, volcanic rock and red slate, along with own-rooted vines.
Fermentation takes place spontaneously in the old cask, then 24 months on full lees in the barrel (without racking) plus 24 months of bottle maturation.
It tastes concentrated and clear: more structure, more tension, more lingering effect.
Exclusive and rare in the Dr. Loosen wooden box.
Three Kabinett Rieslings from three legendary Mosel vineyards in one package.
The Kabi package brings you exactly the kind of Riesling that is both light-footed and highly exciting: lively freshness, juicy fruit and that typical Mosel energy that simply calls for "another glass".
What's included in the package:
- 2 x 2024 Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Kabinett
- 2 x 2024 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett
- 2 x 2024 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett
In terms of taste, the package covers exactly the range that makes Kabinett so charming : Bernkasteler Lay is clear and elegant, Erdener Treppchen juicy and deep, and Ürziger Würzgarten aromatic, expressive and a little wild.
Three wines that perfectly demonstrate what Dr. Loosen stands for at the estate wine level: clear style, honest origin and a great deal of drinking pleasure.
The starter package is the uncomplicated entry into the Dr. Loosen world: fresh, precise and made for evenings when you simply fancy some really good wine.
What's included in the package:
- 2x 2025 Pinot Blanc
- 2x 2024 Blauschiefer Riesling dry
- 2x 2024 Rotschiefer Riesling dry
Three estate wines that show what this is all about: dry, easy to drink, with gently animating acidity and the typical minerality from our slate slopes of the Middle Moselle.
Blue slate Rieslings in three versions: All cool, firm, with typical Mosel fine acidity and that slightly salty minerality that immediately makes you want the next sip.
What's included in the package:
- 2x 2024 Blauschiefer Riesling dry
- 2x 2024 Graacher Riesling dry
- 2x 2024 Bernkasteler Lay GROSSES GEWÄCHS Riesling dry
Three dry Rieslings, one common denominator: grown on blue slate.
Here you can taste how differently the same soil can express itself:
The Blauschiefer Riesling is a characteristic Mosel Riesling from various parcels of our blue slate vineyards. Lively, juicy, invigorating and well-balanced.
The Graacher Riesling, with its freshness and elegance, combines the characteristics of the Graach vineyards into a typical local Riesling.
The "Lay" (an old term for slate) is a gently curving slope towards the Moselle with weathered slate soil, which produces full-bodied, strongly mineral wines.
Simply three bottles that show in the glass why Mosel Riesling from our slate vineyards is in a league of its own.
Three Rieslings that truly shine when paired with grilled food in summer: dry, crisp, and mineral, with a subtly bitter note that elegantly balances spiciness, roasted aromas, and marinades. This selection is perfect for meat, fish, grilled vegetables, and anything that tastes like summer and good weather.
What's included in the package:
- 2x 2024 Rotschiefer Riesling dry
- 2x 2024 Kinheimer Rosenberg GROSSES GEWÄCHS Riesling dry
- 2x 2024 Grauschiefer Riesling off-dry
The red slate brings pull and spice to the glass, the Kinheimer Rosenberg GG takes the whole thing to the next level with more depth and structure, and the grey slate, with its delicate bitterness, ensures a juicy drinking flow when things get a little smokier, spicier or sharper.
Light, juicy, elegant in a glass: This package is made for the first days when you can sit outside for longer periods again.
What's included in the package:
- 2x 2025 Pinot Blanc
- 2x 2023 Satyricus Riesling dry
- 2x 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling TRADITION off-dry
The Pinot Blanc keeps everything relaxed, the Sayricus adds energy, and the off-dry Himmelreich makes it extra enjoyable to drink.
Three wines that taste like spring : Fresh, with clear fruit and just right when you simply want to open a bottle in good company.

Dr. Loosen Estate
Pioneer of the rediscovered German Riesling culture
In family ownership for over 200 years, the estate has been led by Ernst F. Loosen since 1988. In his view, great wines are the perfect expression of soil, climate, and grape variety.
With the heritage of his ancestors – own-rooted, old vines in historic Grosse Lagen of the Central Mosel – he found exactly the material needed to craft distinctive, complex wines of world-class caliber. Today, Dr. Loosen is internationally recognized as the flagship of a rediscovered German Riesling culture.
Since 1993, the winery has been a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
Dr. Loosen Estate
OUR VINEYARDS
In the 1868 vineyard map of the Trier administrative district, created as a basis for tax assessment for Mosel estates, nine of our vineyards were designated as Grosse Lagen.
This classification is comparable to the Grand Cru system of Burgundy and was updated in 1995 by Stuart Pigott and Hugh Johnson in their German Wine Atlas. Today, we deliberately draw on this historically proven, cultural classification.
Since 1988, we have bottled exclusively Rieslings from these classified Grosse Lagen as single-vineyard wines, while all other wines are released by us as Gutsriesling.
