The "Lay" (an old term for slate) is a gently sloping hillside on the outskirts of Bernkastel, curving towards the Moselle River. The weathered slate soil produces full-bodied, intensely mineral wines, often with notes of green apple, white peach, and sometimes cassis.

The vineyard

Bernkastel Lay

Terroir: Blue slate

The Bernkasteler Lay (Lay is an old word for slate) is located on the outskirts of Bernkastel, on the banks of the Moselle River. The name refers to the soil, which consists of deep, weathered blue slate. This site has a somewhat gentler slope than the winery's other vineyards. It produces powerful, fruit-forward Rieslings, often with notes of green apple and blackcurrant.

The Devonian slate in the Moselle Valley displays a wide variety of colors, depending on its specific mineral composition. These diverse soil characteristics, combined with the specific climatic conditions, give the wine its distinctive aromas.

VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS

VDP.GROSSE LAGE® designates Germany’s most prestigious vineyards. Here, the finest wines develop, distinguished by complex flavors, expressive site character, and exceptional ageing potential. The sites are defined by the VDP regional associations and are precisely parcelled.

Grapes are selectively hand-harvested, and yields are strictly limited to a maximum of 50 hl per hectare.

At our estate, we produce seven VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® wines from VDP.GROSSE LAGE® vineyards. These are dry Rieslings, hand-picked and hand-selected, spontaneously fermented in used oak casks, and aged on the full lees in the same casks for at least one year before release.

This careful process gives the wines not only captivating aromas but also outstanding structure and natural harmony, allowing them to age gracefully over many years.

In family ownership for over 200 years, the estate has been led by Ernst F. Loosen since 1988.

In his view, great wines are the perfect expression of soil, climate, and grape variety.

With the heritage of his ancestors – own-rooted, old vines in historic Grosse Lagen of the Central Mosel – he found exactly the material needed to craft distinctive, complex wines of world-class caliber. Today, Dr. Loosen is internationally recognized as the flagship of a rediscovered German Riesling culture.

Since 1993, the winery has been a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
