When Erni Loosen rediscovered the remarkable quality and longevity of his ancestors' dry Rieslings, he set about reviving the culture and techniques of his family heritage. The GG Réserve wines are selectively harvested from the best parcels of very old, ungrafted vines in Grand Cru vineyards. They are fermented naturally, like traditional GG Rieslings, but mature for 24 months without filtration or fining on the lees in traditional oak casks. This is followed by a further 48 months of bottle aging before release. This extended maturation period lends the wines an additional dimension of finesse and balance, perfectly expressing the unique terroir of each individual vineyard.

The vineyard

Erden Prälat

Terroir: Red slate

This is undoubtedly our finest vineyard. With its exceptionally warm microclimate, perfect southern exposure, and red slate soil, it produces Rieslings of great power and complexity. The sheltered vineyard location between the river and the rocky massif allows us to produce great dry Rieslings, as well as high-quality Auslese and Botrytis selections, every year. Typical wines from the Prälat vineyard are aromas of mango, passion fruit, and bitter almonds.

The multi-layered, finely weathered red slate of the Erdener Prälaten produces majestic, multifaceted wines with breathtaking richness and concentration.

VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS RÉSERVE

GREAT DRY MOSEL RIESLING.

Since the 2011 vintage, we have been producing VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® Réserve wines from selected VDP.GROSSE LAGE® vineyards. These currently include Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Ürziger Würzgarten and Erdener Prälat, with additional sites to follow in the future. At present, reserves from the 2018 and 2019 vintages are available.

With their diverse soil formations, blue slate, volcanic rock and red slate, these vineyards, planted with ungrafted vines, represent the very quintessence of our estate.

Only perfectly healthy grapes from the finest parcels, harvested and rigorously selected by hand, are spontaneously fermented in old Fuder casks. The wines mature there for 24 months on the full lees, without racking, followed by a further 24 months of bottle ageing. Only then are they released for sale.

In family ownership for over 200 years, the estate has been led by Ernst F. Loosen since 1988.

In his view, great wines are the perfect expression of soil, climate, and grape variety.

With the heritage of his ancestors – own-rooted, old vines in historic Grosse Lagen of the Central Mosel – he found exactly the material needed to craft distinctive, complex wines of world-class caliber. Today, Dr. Loosen is internationally recognized as the flagship of a rediscovered German Riesling culture.

Since 1993, the winery has been a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
