The grapes for this great, dry wine ripen in the oldest parcel of the Treppchen vineyard, where there is always enough wind to prevent rot from developing in the first place. This allows for very long ripening periods. The Treppchen vineyard, with its bright red, iron-rich slate, produces spicy, complex wines of enormous minerality and density, characterized by aromas of red apple and ripe quince.

The vineyard

Terroir: Red slate

This vineyard borders directly on the eastern side of the Prälats estate and is so steep that centuries ago stone steps were built into the slope to allow workers better access to the vines. While the wines from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard resemble a graceful ballerina, those from the steps are more like muscular, freestyle climbers. The iron-rich, red slate soil produces wines that are rich, elegant, and complex, with an intensely mineral finish.

Volcanic activity and the formation of the meandering Moselle valley created this distinctive red slate soil in Erden in prehistoric times.

VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS

VDP.GROSSE LAGE zeichnet die hochwertigsten deutschen Weinberge aus. Hier reifen die besten Weine mit komplexem Geschmack, expressivem Lagencharakter und besonderem Reifepotenzial. Die Lagen werden von den VDP Regionalverbänden bestimmt und parzellengenau abgegrenzt.

Die Trauben werden selektiv von Hand geerntet und die Erntemenge ist auf einen Ertrag von maximal 50 hl pro Hektar beschränkt.

Wir stellen in unserem Weingut 7 Grosse Gewächse aus VDP.GROSSE LAGE-Weinbergen her. Das sind trockene Rieslinge, handgelesen und -selektiert, in gebrauchten Eichenfässern spontanvergoren und in ebenjenen mindestens ein Jahr auf der Vollhefe gereift. Erst dann kommen die Weine in den Verkauf.

So erhalten die Weine, neben einer faszinierenden Aromatik, auch eine großartige Struktur und natürliche Harmonie für ein langes Leben.

Since 1993, the winery has been a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
