The vineyard

Ürzig Würzgarten

Terroir: Volcanic rock

Bright red and incredibly steep, the Ürziger Würzgarten vineyard forms a unique amphitheater of Rotliegend rock on the Moselle. Although it lies directly upstream from the Erden vineyards, the Ürziger Würzgarten produces a completely different kind of great Riesling, with great depth and full of exotic, spicy aromas. The weathered red, schistose volcanic rock makes the Ürziger Würzgarten so unique on the Moselle. A high iron content in the soil gives the site its vibrant color.

VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS

VDP.GROSSE LAGE® designates Germany’s most prestigious vineyards. Here, the finest wines develop, distinguished by complex flavors, expressive site character, and exceptional ageing potential. The sites are defined by the VDP regional associations and are precisely parcelled.

Grapes are selectively hand-harvested, and yields are strictly limited to a maximum of 50 hl per hectare.

At our estate, we produce seven VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® wines from VDP.GROSSE LAGE® vineyards. These are dry Rieslings, hand-picked and hand-selected, spontaneously fermented in used oak casks, and aged on the full lees in the same casks for at least one year before release.

This careful process gives the wines not only captivating aromas but also outstanding structure and natural harmony, allowing them to age gracefully over many years.

In family ownership for over 200 years, the estate has been led by Ernst F. Loosen since 1988.

In his view, great wines are the perfect expression of soil, climate, and grape variety.

With the heritage of his ancestors – own-rooted, old vines in historic Grosse Lagen of the Central Mosel – he found exactly the material needed to craft distinctive, complex wines of world-class caliber. Today, Dr. Loosen is internationally recognized as the flagship of a rediscovered German Riesling culture.

Since 1993, the winery has been a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
