When Erni Loosen rediscovered the remarkable quality and longevity of his ancestors' dry Rieslings, he set about reviving the culture and techniques of his family heritage. The GG Réserve wines are selectively harvested from the best parcels of very old, ungrafted vines in Grand Cru vineyards. They are fermented naturally, like traditional GG Rieslings, but mature for 24 months without filtration or fining on the lees in traditional oak casks. This is followed by a further 48 months of bottle aging before release. This extended maturation period lends the wines an additional dimension of finesse and balance, perfectly expressing the unique terroir of each individual vineyard.

The vineyard

Wehlen Sonnenuhr

Terroir: Blue slate

This very steep vineyard produces one of the most elegant and delicately fragrant white wines in the world. The stony, shallow, blue slate soil imparts a delicate, fresh acidity and a unique elegance to the wine. The wines of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard are the most charming of our estate when young, captivating with aromas of white peach and green apple.

In Wehlen there is almost no topsoil or humus, but almost exclusively broken and weathered shards of the pure blue slate of the Moselle Valley. This purity is reflected in the wines of this site.

VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS RÉSERVE

GREAT, DRY MOSEL RIESLING.

Since the 2011 vintage, we have been producing VDP.GG Réserve wines® from selected Grand Cru vineyards. These include today the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the Ürziger Würzgarten and the Erdener Prälat – More layers will follow in the future. Currently, there are Reserves from the 2018 and 2019 vintage available.

With their diverse soil formations – blue slate, volcanic rock and red slate – these layers form with their own-rooted vines the quintessence of our winery.

Only healthy grapes from the best parcels, hand-picked and hand-selected, are spontaneously fermented in old oak casks and mature there for 24 months on the lees, without racking, and then for a further 24 months in the bottle. Only then are the wines released for sale.

In family ownership for over 200 years, the estate has been led by Ernst F. Loosen since 1988.

In his view, great wines are the perfect expression of soil, climate, and grape variety.

With the heritage of his ancestors – own-rooted, old vines in historic Grosse Lagen of the Central Mosel – he found exactly the material needed to craft distinctive, complex wines of world-class caliber. Today, Dr. Loosen is internationally recognized as the flagship of a rediscovered German Riesling culture.

Since 1993, the winery has been a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
