The Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Kabinett demonstrates year after year why this parcel of land, located directly south of Bernkastel, is among the most distinctive sites in the Middle Moselle. The deep soil, characterized by a fine layer of blue slate, optimally retains heat and gives the wine its typical combination of juicy fruit, subtle spice, and a supple texture.
In the glass, the Kabinett presents itself as clear and brilliant. Aromatically, it displays ripe citrus notes, juicy Gala apple and Mirabelle plum aromas, accompanied by a light herbal spiciness and a hint of wet slate.

Bernkastel Lay

Terroir: Blue slate

The Bernkasteler Lay (Lay is an old word for slate) is located on the outskirts of Bernkastel, on the banks of the Moselle River. The name refers to the soil, which consists of deep, weathered blue slate. This site has a somewhat gentler slope than the winery's other vineyards. It produces powerful, fruit-forward Rieslings, often with notes of green apple and blackcurrant.

The Devonian slate in the Moselle Valley displays a wide variety of colors, depending on its specific mineral composition. These diverse soil characteristics, combined with the specific climatic conditions, give the wine its distinctive aromas.

CLASSIC, OFF-DRY RIESLINGS FROM CLASSIFIED GRAND CRU SITES OF THE MOSEL

From Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese, we hand-select the grapes for these delicate, off-dry Prädikat wines, depending on the conditions each vintage provides.

The Mosel, with its cool nights and misty mornings, offers ideal conditions for noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which shapes the unmistakable character of the Auslesen, Beerenauslesen, and Trockenbeerenauslesen.

The Moselle, with its cool nights and damp morning mists, offersideal conditions for noble rot (Botrytis), which forms the unmistakable character of the Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese wines.

In family ownership for over 200 years, the estate has been led by Ernst F. Loosen since 1988.

In his view, great wines are the perfect expression of soil, climate, and grape variety.

With the heritage of his ancestors – own-rooted, old vines in historic Grosse Lagen of the Central Mosel – he found exactly the material needed to craft distinctive, complex wines of world-class caliber. Today, Dr. Loosen is internationally recognized as the flagship of a rediscovered German Riesling culture.

Since 1993, the winery has been a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
