The Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett embodies the classic Mosel style like few other wines: refined, delicate, vibrant, and crystal clear. The steep, south-facing slopes of the Sonnenuhr vineyard, with their deep blue Devonian slate, bestow upon this Kabinett a distinctive combination of delicate fruit, intense minerality, and vibrant freshness.
The aroma is precise and cool, with notes of white peach, lemon, pear, green apple, and a hint of white blossoms. On the palate, the wine is ethereally light, carried by its fine, vibrant acidity, which is perfectly interwoven with the subtle, inviting sweetness.

The vineyard

Wehlen Sonnenuhr

Terroir: Blue slate

This very steep vineyard produces one of the most elegant and delicately fragrant white wines in the world. The stony, shallow, blue slate soil imparts a delicate, fresh acidity and a unique elegance to the wine. The wines of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard are the most charming of our estate when young, captivating with aromas of white peach and green apple.

In Wehlen there is almost no topsoil or humus, but almost exclusively broken and weathered shards of the pure blue slate of the Moselle Valley. This purity is reflected in the wines of this site.

VDP.GROSSE LAGE

CLASSIC, OFF-DRY RIESLINGS FROM CLASSIFIED GRAND CRU SITES OF THE MOSEL.

From Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese, we hand-select the grapes for these delicate, off-dry Prädikat wines, depending on the conditions each vintage provides.

The Mosel, with its cool nights and misty mornings, offers ideal conditions for noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which shapes the unmistakable character of the Auslesen, Beerenauslesen, and Trockenbeerenauslesen.

The Moselle, with its cool nights and damp morning mists, offers ideal conditions for noble rot (Botrytis), which forms the unmistakable character of the Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese wines.

In family ownership for over 200 years, the estate has been led by Ernst F. Loosen since 1988.

In his view, great wines are the perfect expression of soil, climate, and grape variety.

With the heritage of his ancestors – own-rooted, old vines in historic Grosse Lagen of the Central Mosel – he found exactly the material needed to craft distinctive, complex wines of world-class caliber. Today, Dr. Loosen is internationally recognized as the flagship of a rediscovered German Riesling culture.

Since 1993, the winery has been a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
